Just read an article about Singapore ringing chimes all over the island on National Day, and encourage all the Singaporeans to stop what they are doing at that point of time (lets exclude some activities as you know why yeah?) and recite our National Pledge.
During the article written by The Newspaper. They wrote that by doing a survey of 100 Singaporeans. Less than half of them will actually stop and recite the vows. While the rest will continue whatever they are doing, and ignore the chimes.
We thought it would be worth finding out. So we asked 100 Singaporeans between the ages of 20 and 70 to recite the Pledge.
The results were disappointing, but not surprising.
Out of the 100, 41 did not know the pledge at all and another 24 stumbled on the words. Only 35 could recite it without stuttering.
When we asked the same bunch if they will participate in the Pledge Moment, only 42 said yes.
The other 58 said they would probably ignore the chimes and go about their business.
I won’t say I’m the most faithful Singaporean out there. But I do know that I’m utterly ashamed that I can only remember half of the pledge when I think about it. Of course now I remember after doing a wiki search.
But, there’s this guilt in me that makes me feel well, embarrassed. Lets just hope that I’m able to recite it on the very day itself. Plus I’m actually quite proud to be a Singaporean, as I REALLY love the government (Except for the education part =p )
19 Days till Singapore’s 44th Birthday!
